Not All Mold Is Visible
In many instances mold is visible. Other times it is not. Mold is usually found where there has been moisture, specifically some kind of water exposure. Basements, attics, crawl spaces, leaky roofs, pipes, bathrooms, heating and cooling systems, ductwork, leaky windows or doors are all vulnerable to the growth of mold spores if any water has gained access to the inside of a home. If those spores are discovered and treated with removal of the affected areas plus the application of an anti-fungal within the first 48 hours, it is possible to avoid any long term harm. But after 48 hours if the mold growth has gone unnoticed or untreated, it will become a serious health problem.
Black mold, or Stachybotrys (Stachybotrys chartarum, also known by its synonym Stachybotrys atra), is the most recognized and visible black mold. It is extremely toxic to both people and pets. And if mold spores have gotten into the ductwork they can easily spread throughout the house, contaminating the indoor air.
Where Does Mold Come From?
Finding the source of the moisture that creates environments where molds develop and spread is key to the prevention process. It is most important to locate the source of the leak as soon as possible so that the area can be immediately closed off from any further entry to the house. Only after that has been done can the treatment and renovation work begin. Many homes are not properly insulated which leads to mold formation. Heating and cooling system air ducts that are not cleaned before installation and regularly during use are a haven for molds and potential catalysts for spreading toxic spores throughout the home.
Common Symptoms Associated With Mold In The Home
Many people confuse mold exposure issues with allergies and other illnesses.
Seasonal allergies that last too long, repeated respiratory infections, childhood asthma… Any and all of these can be caused by mold growth inside your home. Make no mistake, poor indoor air quality caused by mold is a serious health threat. In fact, we are in the midst of a childhood asthma epidemic with toxic mold being a top contributing factor. Proper insulation and ventilation is the key to mold prevention. This is precisely what Healthy Home Builders focuses on while renovating older homes with prior water damage or when building a new one.
It’s All About The Building Envelope
Healthy Home Builders pays particular attention to what is called “the building envelope”. This refers to every part of the home that comes into contact with the outdoor elements. During construction and/or renovation we take extra precautions to seal off access from the foundation to the roof. Healthy Home Builders has successfully concluded numerous renovations that included insulating against future water damage with a proper moisture mitigation plan. No water will gain access to a Healthy Home Builder’s house!
